IEEE PES SBC CEA in association with IEEE PES Kerala Chapter conducted ‘EXPEDITA’, an
Industrial Visit at 2 MW ANERT Solar Power Plant, Kuzhalmannam, Palakkad on the 21st of October 2022. Dr. John George, [Professor and HOD, EEE Department, CEA; Vice Chair, IEEE Professional Activities, IEEE Kerala Section; Chapter Advisor, IEEE PES SBC CEA] and Mrs. Sumi Soman (Assistant Professor in EEE Department of College of Engineering Adoor) were the accompanying staff for the industrial visit from College of Engineering Adoor.
Industrial visits provide the students with an opportunity to learn practically through interaction, working methods and employment practices. It gives the students exposure to current work practices as opposed to theoretical knowledge being taught in their college classrooms. The target of the event was to acquaint the participants with the technical and theoretical aspect of using solar energy and educate them on the working, installation, maintenance and all other important concepts of a solar power plant. A funding of 10,000 ₹ was granted from IEEE PES Kerala Chapter to IEEE PES SBC CEA to conduct the event. Dr. Ajith Gopi (IEEE PES Kerala Chapter Chair, Joint Chief Technical Manager ANERT) gave his full support for conducting the event and helped coordinate the event with ANERT Solar Power Plant.
The team from College of Engineering Adoor arrived at the solar plant at 11 A.M. Dr. John
George gave an overview of the plant to the students. The students were then divided into two groups. Each group was entored by two junior engineers working at the plant. Each group was educated in detail about the plant and each specification of the various systems and components that make up the plant. The array layout of the solar plant as well as the division of the array into modules and strings was explained. They were shown the central inverter, the central monitoring system, the backup system, etc. and the working of each system was explained to the students. The students were then taken outside and additional information about the layout was given to the students.
All of the students actively participated in the event and most of them cleared their doubts by interacting with the staff from ANERT. At the end, of the event a photo session was conducted.
The event successfully achieved its aim of illuminating the students with the working of a solar power plant.
